What was Mark Twain like in real life? It would be interesting to know. His quotes belie an immense practicality wrapped in profound expression. Mark Twain is one of those people near the top of the heap of people I have 'known' in my life who were not just a step ahead of me, or two steps ahead of me, but three steps ahead of me at every turn and no matter how hard I try I have never, and never will, catch up with them. They are always on the next page before me. Herein lies Mark Twains brilliance .... I don't mind that this is the case. With other people like this I have resented their 'superiority' over me, my inability to catch up with them. In the case of Mark Twain I just want to sit there and marvel at him as I read his words of wit and wisdom. Buy this book people, it is a bargain at twice the price. Here's a quote by Mark Twain I didn't see in the book, 'Denial ain't just a river in Egypt!'
This little booklet is, definitely, not the best of Mark Twain's great wit and wisdom. It seems to be scratched-together delightful stuff that is not under someone else's copyright, watered down with not-so-impressive notes that have not been published before, probably for good reason.I adore Mark Twain. And I think he would turn in his grave if he saw all those notes published he had not found worthy to get published himself.
If you like Mark Twain, this is not your book. The volume is so thin, I use it as a Page marker in other booksThe quotes are not all Twain's, and the binding quality reminds me of grade school readers. This is a book you might find on the commuter train after the previous owner decided to just walk away from it rather than making the effort to throw it away. Good luck
Mark Twain is my favorite Author. I've read most of his books and find his wit and wisdom on par with Shakespeare. Often I can recall a subject from one of his snarky quotes, but not enough to find it with Internet Search. For that, I really like the way this book gathers all of his sayings from speeches, books, and essays and arranges them by subject alphabetically. To find a specific word from his works that I can remember, I use the Kindle Search. Any Twain fan should have this book, and for those who haven't discovered his wit, this book is a fun place to start.
Yes, there are many nice quotes in the book, but this review is about the book itself. I have perhaps 15% of the book remaining to read (in the Kindle edition) and have lost count of the number of quotes that appear two or three times at different places in the book, each time introduced as if the reader had not seen it previously -- sometimes as the same standalone quote, sometimes repeated within a larger anecdote, sometimes slightly modified. It is as if the author didn't think Twain had said enough to fill a book without being redundant. Reading what Twain had to say about reports of his death, or other authors, or creative insults, or perspectives on religion, or the character of Congress is a lot of fun. Reading the same quotes about those subjects, and more, over an over again is not as fun. Also, there are various passages that are unattributed anecdotes about Mark Twain that seem out of place without some missing explanation -- their punchlines are what someone else said about Twain or what someone else said about something else entirely while in Twain's presence, but the source of the information is a bit of mystery and, of course, is not actually Twain's wit or wisdom. They are sometimes nice anecdotes but they hang oddly in the text without the author explaining how the thing is known or why it relates to the subject at hand -- it is as if the real subject is something like "clever things Mark Twain and others around him sometimes said." Finally, in the Kindle edition at least, there are various places where one cannot tell whether a sentence is part of the author's narrative or a quotation from Twain himself, which again adds to the sense of the book having not been adequately prepared prior to publication.
Thanks to Mrs. Sue and Mrs. Paterson in English classes, reading of American Writers and story telling. The wit from "The Wit & Wisdom of Mark", is like Paul Harvey the rest of the story; the thoughts and quotes which Mark Twins writing in context and focus. Recommend purchase for writers or just collectors
Very nicely done with contents, short biography, timeline, wit + wisdom divided by category into chapters, and Mark Twain bibliography = 192 pp. Haven't found any repetitions yet but have seen a few typos, no impediment. Front cover has gold trim around Twain's head and back cover has gold around summary and excerpts. Cover is not paper: the decorations are embedded into the hard cover. Beautiful.
The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain: A Book of Quotations (Dover Thrift Editions)The quotes of Mark Twain, who died in 1910, are as apropos today as they were when he was alive. There are quotes like, "The past may not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme." and "When in doubt, tell the truth." You can get many humorous quotes that can fit many different situations. His wit is still great, and his tongue still sharp!
