Very well written. Pulls you in from the beginning and keeps you engaged. Probably the best quality is its compelling characterization of Arthur's three sisters. Malory doesn't give us much to work with in terms of their personalities and motivations, but this book fills out their characters in a way that's both imaginative and consistent with what Malory does tell us. Morgan le Fay, in particular, is confusing in Malory...malevolent all the way through but suddenly apparently benevolent at the end, and Bedivere actually hands Arthur over to her! This book fills in those kinds of gaps.Even though it takes you all the way through--from before Arthur's conception to his departure to Avalon--don't expect all the different stories in the traditional tellings (e.g., Balin and the Dolorous Stroke, adventures of knights errant, Grail Quest, Elaine of Astolat, etc.). It's told from the perspective of Elaine of Garlot, so what you get is what she's experienced, or at least what she's heard about.

For many, many years, stories of King Arthur have been my escape. I compare all to Mary Stewart's gold standard books, which I reread every few years for the pure joy of it.The Forgotten Sister is brilliant. I enjoyed every minute and had empathy for the many important characters. It's a wonderful blend of Britians politics and Avalons mystery. It sets up the circumstances of the myth and left me hoping to see the dawning of the once and future king.

I tried, but this is one of the only books ever that I just could not read. The language is irreverent and distracting and I was quite disappointed as someone who loves everything Arthurian. I'm glad that others who have reviewed enjoyed it, but for me it was unreadable.

I enjoyed a different take on such a treasured story!

Kept my interest, pretty good read. Just starting the second book.

Great twist on the Arthur legend.

A seriously amazing Arthurian re-telling from the viewpoint of an often overlooked character. The main character was a very realistically written woman and the story pulled mainly from the original Arthurian myth while respecting the actual history of women in Britain. I also like that it kept all the drama from the original tale without making the story into a melodrama.

The end ruined the whole book for me.
