Was very informative on ACT treatment. We into great detail and gave examples of the situations. To how it was applies.

The first quarter of the book is primarily about CBT but they also briefly summarize other modalities such as Behavioral Activation, Mindfullness, exercise and diet. Granted all of those are behaviors that a person can change and a CBT therapist may recommend those activities to experiment with, however, the books title indicates it is primarily about CBT.It is an all-text book and if you've ever read other CBT books like "The Feel Good Handbook" you will see forms or even charts to help you journal your thoughts and behaviors. Many of the sentences are structured from a non-therapist point of view such as when describing automatic thoughts it is described as "we find ourselves automatically thinking them" referring to thoughts. A therapist will write "you will find yourself automatically thinking them." Also most therapists have vignettes or stories of patients who had irrational or "negative" thoughts to give an example. Another thing is that there are no footnotes or bibliography notes anywhere when I know many of the concepts are not original to the author. For example it says, "Research at Harvard University showed that the harder people tried to stop thinking about something,the more they actually thought about it." This seemed vague and should have had a footnote citation so I had to do research to find out that it was from a book called "White Bears and Other Unwanted Thoughts: Suppression, Obsession, and the Psychology of Mental Control." by Daniel Wegner.The book is available in Kindle and Audible. I am reviewing the kindle version that I got on Kindle Unlimited. I heard about the book on a facebook group where the author or maybe his publisher was offering the book for free if we reviewed it. She was pretty pushy about getting a review posted ASAP I took my time to review the book in full with many notes. Unfortunately I have a lot of feedback for the author and promoter of which I'm leaving in this review. I'd mostly recommend removing the non CBT parts of the book, inserting some forms to help the reader track their thoughts, use citations whenever possible because it lends credibility to your writing that you aren't just making this technique up as you go, put an index at the back, add stories or vignettes from your personal experience or from your clients if you are a therapist and put an autobiographical page in the back about the author. I'm sorry but much of what was written did not seem like it came from a professional therapist but maybe looks like you combed the Psychology Today website to write a book.That being said, it is still well organized, does not appear to have any spelling errors or typos, and mostly easy to read. So it gets 3 stars for organizing much of the content found on the internet about CBT and other modalities in a single book.

I am a Neuroscience MSc student in one of the top medical schools in London and one of the potent interventions that our school would normally recommend is CBT. I came across Graig Huffman's book over at Amazon and I must say, I am very pleased with what I have read. In our world, where medical jargons could exhaust the most skilled intellectual warrirors, this book is a breath of fresh air. It is easy to read, and there are very few logical leaps. It is well structured, beginning from basal skills of establishing types of thoughts, to therapy goals/techniques. As a CBT practioner, it is of utmost importance to establish that our thoughts create emotions and our perceptions has a big role in this. This book clearly establishes that premise.Here are some few points that I would like to add as to how one could improve this book. Perhaps it would be beneficial to include a brief overview on the role of neurotransmitters and how CBT can facilitate favourable brain chemical exchanges. It would also be good to include the necessary CBT forms template needed by beginning practitioners. Over all, I highly recommend this book to CBT practitioners. Well done!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing a review. This book is a great introduction into CBT and ACT. I am giving it 4 stars because the author of the book did not provide any credentials about what experience they have with CBT or ACT. The book seems to summarize information that is already out there about the two theories without offering anything new.Also, I agree with a previous reviewer who said the promoter of this book was kind of pushy about getting a review out. I work as a therapist while attending a doctoral program and don’t have a lot of extra time. The promoter did not give a timeline for when the book needed to be reviewed. With that being said, I will probably not review anymore books for this promoter.Overall, this book is a helpful start to learning about CBT and ACT. If you are looking for a workbook, vignettes, and/or a book authored by someone with credentials and experience in the topic being written about then this book is NOT for you. This book would be great for an undergraduate psychology student or anyone who has a general curiosity about these theories.

The tone is honest, informative, and friendly. There's something about it that's almost conversational in how easy it is to read and understand.It's not the friend saying, "Get over it, move on, be happy."It's the friend saying, "It's OK to feel these things, but here is a healthy way to process it so you can learn to love yourself again."

I am a CBT psychotherapist and this book(s) is/are really useful, especially for practitioner-beginners. It gives enough techniques to work with and fine underlining baseline for using them. Also, it is structured in a way you can look for specific disorder, so you have separate part for anxiety, separate for depression and so on. The ACT part of the book is very good written. Perhaps slightly better for theoretical introduction than for specific techniques but anyway, I find it very useful although I am familiar with it.

Very informative book and I am enjoying what I have read so far! Structured almost like a novel which is not typically how I like to read self help books but that is just a matter of personal preference. Still great information provided. :)
