I teach 5th grade math and project these puzzles to the board to use for math talks. My students love these puzzles! We only do one at a time and after finishing one, they always ask to do another! Like number talks, I have students use hand signals to show if they have 1 or more pieces of the puzzle that might help us get to the final solution. It’s really building their confidence to tackle challenging problems and everyone can contribute something. The puzzles can all be solved using whole numbers which helps make these good for number talks. I like that the puzzles get more challenging as you progress through the book. The puzzles help reinforce relationships between area and dimensions of rectangles. We incorporate discussions of critical attributes of rectangles in our discussions. I’m really pleased with this purchase and have referred it to others.
I've never seen this type of puzzle before, but as soon as I saw these I knew I would enjoy them. These puzzles are a lot of fun, and just taxing enough on the brain to make them interesting but not annoyingly difficult. They do get more difficult as you progress through the book, but you build on the knowledge gained from the prior puzzles. At first, you might think these puzzles involve fractions, but they don't. Every puzzle uses only whole numbers to solve each step of the puzzle. Knowing this, it helped me to figure out new approaches to arrive at the solution.
As a secondary math teacher I've watched kids grow into more challenging mazes. I photocopy a few for "rewards" after daily assignment is complete. Great for supporting factoring concept and skills, because these mazes focus multiplication and division steps into fun puzzles.
My kids love this. They learned all about area and perimeter just from solving problems in this book, and this was when they were in first grade. Enough said! It is such a fun way to do math.
My secondary math classes love these. It’s puzzles solved based on area and reasoning skills.
I purchased the book to supplement and challenge my fourth graders. Anything that resembles a puzzle will produce excitement and perseverance.
Loved these. Wish I could find more books. These are more logic based than mathematical.
An excellent book of short puzzles. About 40 puzzles (2/5) in and the puzzle difficulty is beginning to ramp up. I recommend the book to anyone interested in mathematical puzzles.
