About the Author

Max Cleintuar was born in 1929 in the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Of mixed French-Dutch-Indonesian descent, he opted for the Dutch nationality. In 1946, less than a year after the end of the war in the Pacific and in the midst of Indonesia’s struggle for independence, Max left the country for a chance at a better education in the Netherlands. He graduated from the International Centre for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences in Delft and did part of his advanced geology studies at the University of Leyden. From an inexperienced young graduate student to a seasoned Senior Lecturer, the stories chronicle a career spanning over 30 years as a petroleum geologist with Royal-Dutch Shell. Max has co-authored a number of scientific papers during his long career. He is a widower who now lives in Amsterdam where he enjoys writing, painting, playing the piano, and visiting his kids and grandkids.

Living in today’s materialistic world, it was also comforting and inspiring to read about the author’s love for all aspects of Nature, and his admiration for the greatness of the earth. Moreover - and this is to the best of my knowledge as a regular book reader - , it is the first time an oil explorer writes so openly about his long multinational career, describing not only the technicalities of his work, but also the very personal aspects that directly affected his family life.In short: “Travels for Tridacna” is a book very different from what I have seen of comparable subjects before!
