A book from the 40s and only based upon a few years of farming, but right on. He clearly points out the destructive farming practices that were the mark of a "good" farmer at the time. Many farmers now have moved to "no-till" and rely on heavy used of fertilizer and chemicals. The latter he hardly could have imagined and the fertilizer use at the time was minimal. So he recommends disk tillage for weed control. They had nothing else. I'm betting that if Faulkner was to review present farming practices he would both be pleased and distressed. Very much a look at times when observation was the key as measurement was in its infancy.

This author wrote exceptionally well on the subject of why we have poor dirt across America today: Plowing, not tilling, the land. Thankfully from the latest info I have heard, the new farmers are learning this in school and are turning this around so that our soils are really soils. However, this book is invaluable in learning the scientific reason, written for the common lay reader to understand. Worth every penny I paid for it.

Great read. Atypical methods for growing plants but they appear to be as productive as traditional methods.

Refreshing to put common sense of days gone by back into agriculture. No nonsense simplicity without big agribusiness chemicals and other gimmicks that destroy farmland.

Truly a book for any serious organic sustainable interested gardener and farm. Came highly recommended and is not a disappointment.
