I love books set in the ballet world. I guess I never got over my ballet teacher saying those four little words when I was twelve: You have no talent….So I live vicariously through books about dancers who do have talent.Told in three points of view, Tiny Pretty Things is about dancers who may be tiny and pretty on the outside, but appearances can be deceptive. June is Korean and fatherless, her mother close-mouthed about who he even was. She won't speak to June about him or about her time at the same ballet school June now attends. June's insecurities and neuroses manifest themselves in her eating disorder, the one part of her life she can control after she's cast as an understudy in production after production.Gigi is the new girl, a glamorous black dancer from California who fits in at the school about as well as a square peg in a round hole. When she is cast in the best parts in the school's productions, and all the most eligible boys start swarming around her, Gigi has trouble written all over her, not to mention a heart condition she doesn't want anyone to find out about in case it makes her look weak.Finally, there's Bette. Long considered the school's best dancer, she's unused to competition in the studio or anywhere else. Half of the school's golden couple, she seems untouchable. Yet Bette has a secret festering inside her. And when Gigi shows up and takes the roles she considers rightfully hers, Bette can't help but retaliate.All three characters are deliciously flawed. They are fiercely motivated and ambitious, willing to do just about anything to get to the top as dancers. And I mean anything! These girls are mean. Vicious. Savage.I couldn't put it down, and as soon as I finished it, I went and bought the sequel, needing more of their malevolent behavior.

GRADE: CTINY PRETTY THINGS tells the story of three backstabbing ballerinas. Bette looks the path, is supposed to get all the lead roles just as her older sister. Anorexic June always plays understudy and her mother threatens to remove her from the school. Newcomer Gigi doesn't look the part, but she is cast as lead, leaving her with a target on her back.Chapters skip between each girl's narration, although the voices were indistinguishable from one another. While character development was weak, the writers gave the girls unique, interesting backgrounds. I didn't feel like Bette, June and Gigi were multidimensional, though they were all both sympathetic and unsympathetic, some more than others.The writing showed the story and kept me reading even when the plot stagnated. TINY PRETTY THINGS took a long time to find its feet, building to a predictable climax, although the who what why was somewhat a mystery because the major and minor characters were so mean to each other, pulling "prank" that felt more like crimes.I was certain I wouldn't want to read the second boom in the series, but I ended up caring about all the characters and will read book two next. Amazon pulled me in pricing this at $1.99 so that I'd want to read the sequel.

As I’ve said in previous reviews, I’m not a fan of multi-POV novels. I purchased this, enticed by the summary, and pushed aside my dislike. After the introduction and a few chapters I found myself reminded of Pretty Little Liars. I found myself engrossed in the pages of a girl with a seemingly perfect life, another that breaks boundaries while fitting dancer stereotypes, and someone entirely set apart based on terrible racial biases and racism who is breaking boundaries. This is the kind of novel needed, one with diversity that shows young readers of color the representation they need. Tiny Pretty Things was filled with such incredible writing and finger biting drama, something I hope to see adapted for television one day!

What started out as purely a guilty pleasure book morphed into a strong story that tackled many sensitive subjects, including eating disorders, racism, inappropriate student/teacher relations, bullying, prescription drug abuse, and even assault. What impressed me was that all of these tied together in such a matter-of-fact way, showing how these are such common occurrences in that world and shouldn’t be viewed with sensationalism. Similarly, though the characters obviously share a love of ballet, they come from such different backgrounds, which I personally felt made the story more authentic and relevant.My main complaint (which I sort of brought on myself, TBH) is that this book is pretty superficial, surface level. At times it was a bit cliche, but that was basically what I was hoping to get out of this book: a fairly predictable, yet still intriguing story. While the premise is strong, you have to be willing to accept several “coincidences” and just appreciate the book as it is. I also would have appreciated more character development aside from the main three dancers. Finally, to avoid spoilers I’ll just say this: I felt like all romantic relationships should have been removed because they did nothing for the story line, just made added in an extra component to keep track of. Focus on the girls, the cutthroat environment of the academy, and the insane pressure to be the best of the best.The story ends with several dramatic revelations (and the characters haven’t really had a chance to make any sense of them yet), so fortunately there is a second book to continue with the drama, Shiny Broken Pieces, out now!
