Lori Majewski was a cofounder and editor-in-chief of Teen People. She was also an executive editor of Entertainment Weekly and Us Weekly. She lives in Weehawken, New Jersey.   Jonathan Bernstein is a Los Angeles–based writer. He is the author of, among other titles, Pretty In Pink: The Golden Age of Teenage Movies, and has contributed to publications such as The Guardian, Spin, Rolling Stone, and The Face.

I still remember it, the first time I heard an unambiguous, ‘80s new wave song. I was about 15 or so and Hungry Like the Wolf came on the radio, and it was like nothing I had ever heard. My life changed, the course of my musical future took a dramatic turn right then and there. And I loved it!The ‘80s brought us some damn good new wave songs, and more than a few bad ones. But bad or good, those bands were out there trying something new, exploring hitherto unknown terrain, and it was a fun journey to be on. Of course, the music came first, but also the fashion (ok, more bad than good on that front), the outsider attitude, the dancing, the scene, it was all a blast.This MAD WORLD book brought back a lot of those memories. Actually starting in the late ‘70s (a bit ahead of my time), the book gives a then-and-now perspective on a number of memorable, flamboyant artists who no longer felt constrained by the rote manner of making music. Using then-modern technology to come up with something different, they made their own way in the world.The book presents a pretty wide perspective of artists, from the very good (New Order), the unbelievably successful (Duran Duran), the bad (Animotion), the ridiculous but still fun (A Flock of Seagulls), and the self-defeating (ABC). We get a nice behind the scenes look at the sounds that made a decade, and also a view of the memories, some warm, other bitter, of the artists nowadays.If you used more hair gel in a day then you now use in a month, wore too much eyeliner (or any, if you’re a guy), and despite being in prime shape still danced yourself into a slather Wednesday through Sunday back in the day, this book is for you.

Mad World is a fine book about the new wave era, mostly told from the viewpoint of some of the artists who defined the style and the era. Certainly, the insights of these artists are valuable in gaining a better understanding of some of the iconic songs, their inspirations, and their recording. The authors also include updates on what happened to the bands after the era. The one odd feature is that although one of the authors is American, the only American artists are those that rose to prominence in northeastern Ohio (e.g., the Waitresses, Devo). The new wave and no Cars? No Blondie? No B-52's? No, they're not here. One major "oops" in an otherwise very intriguing book.

I do believe some songs should've been included here. I believe the authors looked for the "hit songs" rather than the songs that REALLY defined the 80s. Hopefully they will come out with a Part 2 and include other memorable songs!Maybe "To cut the long story short" instead of "True" by Spandau Ballet? (that is such a commercial song!) or "Don't you want me" instead of "Being boiled" by The Human League.I am so UNSURE about why one hit wonders like "I want candy", "Obsession" or "I melt with you" are in this book?.REALLY good book! I want to say the "intro" of each chapter (the authors little convo) maybe is a little bit too much on ever-single-chapter. A little bit TOO MUCH INFORMATION if i might add ("Depeche provided the soundtrack for my imaginary sex life" and "I married a guy named Simon and left him for a hotter guy named John"... hmmm too much! Maybe save that space and include some songs that are TRULY MISSING in this book!There are SO MANY acts missing in this book.-The Motels-The Gogos-Oingo Boingo-Missing Persons-B52s-Culture Club-Eurythmics-The Cure-The CarsIf you had Duran Duran for a whole chapter, maybe some Power Station songs could've been included ("Some like it hot" had SO many new things back in the 80s, it was such a game changer). I mean, you could've included "Missing Persons" as well.

With that one line, I was sold. I was expecting to relive certain formative moments of my youth. I wasn't expecting it to be so funny. There's a ton of insight here, both from the interviews with the musicians involved, and from two fans with very different perspectives, and wide ranging opinions. And a lot of it really hit home (Five Stages of Duran Duran, amirite?), but I also gained background info which, quite frankly, explained a lot. I'd recommend this both for nostalgic Gen X'ers, and for younger generations who have no frame of reference for Cold War ennui. And it made me laugh.

Just finished the book. What an immensely fun read. I went in thinking that there really isn't anything new I could learn about these songs. Wrong! Awesome interviews, straight from the horses mouth speaking today about what it is was like for them back then and how the singles came to be. This is definitely the kind of book that we aging new wave nerds could debate and argue over for hours. The atrocity of ignoring the Cure and Culture Club…the glory of choosing "New Life" over "Just Can't Get Enough"…Loved the chapters on Adam and the Ants, Spandau, Tears for Fears, ABC, etc etc. and great to see Modern English in here. Always interests me how that song is such a huge part of the 80s nostalgia, yet it didn't even come close to the US Top 40. I think it stalled in the 80's (no pun intended…well, maybe pun intended). I love the packaging of this book, good heavy stock, loads of color, and amazing photos. This is the type of book I'll be keeping on the bookshelf and go back to for reference. Fantastic choice of Duran photo for the cover, that for me is truly iconic of their new wave phase. Even though I really couldn't care less about Devo, Dexys, or Kim Wilde, the interviews were great. Really hoping for part 2 starring The Cure, Culture Club, Scritti (but please God, not Perfect Way..Absolute and Wood Beez were FAR better singles), Naked Eyes, Visage and Altered Images. To name a few. Thanks for the great book, perfect summer read for any child of the 80s.
