About the Author

Mick Conefrey is an author and filmmaker who has made award-winning documentaries on Arctic exploration and Himalayan mountaineering. He also produced the BBC's anniversary film to commemorate the first ascent of Everest in 1953. He is the author of Mountain Men: A History of the Remarkable Climbers and Determined Eccentrics Who First Scaled the World's Most Famous Peaks and A Teacup in a Storm: An Explorer's Guide to Life. He lives in Oxford, England.

This book looks at various aspects of expeditions and exploration and illustrates them with real-life experiences of famous (and not so famous) characters. Problems stemming from the need for food and water, ad hoc vs. recruited teams, how much equipment to bring, etc. Overall, a good book although the quality and subject matter of some of the "spot illustrations" are puzzling.

I guess I didn't read the information about this well, It was mostly anecdotes about the adventures of others, like Shakleton, not so much a how-to book. I wanted a how to book. The book was in good condition and came quickly.

Loved the whole book but really a book about expeditions and past feats of great explorers definitely great for a young teen or boy interested in the modern age of exploring or its history
